RESUMEN

El propósito del estudio fue determinar el efecto que produce la aplicación de una unidad de enseñanza de los deportes de colaboración y oposición diseñada en base a dos propuestas del modelo pedagógico comprensivo: el Teaching Games for Understanding y la Didáctica Cognitiva, en comparación a un modelo tradicional de enseñanza. La muestra estuvo conformada por alumnos(as) de 5° a 8° básicos (12 a 14 años). Mediante metodología observacional, fueron evaluadas las principales acciones de juego eficientes en las dimensiones de ataque y defensa, en momentos de test y retest, a un grupo control (GC) y otro experimental (GE). El análisis de varianza (MANOVA) y las comparaciones por pares con corrección de Bonferroni aplicadas con un alfa de 0.05, evidenciaron diferencias significativas entre ambos grupos, de las acciones motoras de lanzamiento en zona eficaz (GE: 74,3% GC: -16,7%) y Pase simple (GE: -27,1% - GC: -3,1%). Mientras que, mediante el análisis descriptivo de las tasas de ocurrencia, se encontraron diferencias de las acciones motoras de Anticipación (GE:211,1% - GC:20%), marcación eficiente (GE: 330,8% - GC: -7,1%) y desmarcación (GE: 400% - GC: 0%). Los hallazgos de ambos análisis muestran que la aplicación de metodologías comprensivas en la enseñanza de los deportes de colaboración y oposición en el contexto de educación física escolar, mejoran la calidad de las acciones de juego, en comparación a un modelo tradicional de enseñanza.


The purpose of the study was to determine the effect produced by the application of a teaching unit for collaborative and oppositional sports designed on the basis of two proposals of the comprehensive pedagogical model: Teaching Games for Understanding and Cognitive Didactics, compared to a traditional teaching model. The sample consisted of students from 5th to 8th grade (12 to 14 years old). By means of observational methodology, the main efficient game actions in the dimensions of attack and defense were evaluated, in test and retest moments, to a control group (CG) and an experimental group (EG). The analysis of variance (MANOVA) and pairwise comparisons with Bonferroni correction applied with an alpha of 0. 05, showed significant differences between both groups in the motor actions of throwing in the effective zone (EG: 74.3% - CG: -16.7%) and simple passing (EG: -27.1% - CG: -3.1%), while descriptive analysis of the occurrence rates showed differences in the anticipation motor actions (EG: 211.1% - CG: 20%), efficient tackling (EG: 330.8% - CG: -7.1%) and untacking (EG: 400% - CG: 0%). The findings of both analyses show that the application of comprehensive methodologies in the teaching of collaborative and oppositional sports in the context of school physical education improves the quality of the game actions, compared to a traditional teaching model.


O objetivo do estudo foi determinar o efeito produzido pela aplicação de uma unidade de ensino de esportes colaborativos e opostos projetada com base em 2 propostas do modelo pedagógico integral: Jogos de ensino para a compreensão e didática cognitiva, em comparação com um modelo de ensino tradicional. A amostra foi composta por alunos da 5ª à 8ª série (12 a 14 anos). Por meio de metodologia observacional, foram avaliadas as principais ações de jogo eficientes nas dimensões de ataque e defesa, nos momentos de teste e reteste, em um grupo controle (GC) e um grupo experimental (GE). A análise de variância (MANOVA) e as comparações por pares com correção de Bonferroni aplicada com alfa de 0,05, mostraram diferenças significativas entre ambos os grupos, das ações motoras de lançamento na zona efetiva (GE: 74,3% GC: -16,7% ) e passe simples (GE: -27,1% - GC: -3,1%). Já pela análise descritiva das taxas de ocorrência, foram encontradas diferenças nas ações motoras de Antecipação (GE: 211,1% - GC: 20%), marcação eficiente (GE: 330,8% - GC: -7,1%) e desmarcação (GE: 400% - GC: 0%). Os resultados de ambas as análises mostram que a aplicação de metodologias abrangentes no ensino de esportes colaborativos e de oposição no contexto da educação física escolar melhora a qualidade das ações de jogo, em comparação com um modelo de ensino tradicional.

Introduction: Does philosopher's stone exist in physical education? It could be said that teaching games for understanding approach (TGfU) keeps turning everything it touches into gold: its presence in the educational centers, its volume of publications, the way of teaching games and sports, its connections with other approaches, its game categories, learning transferable principles of play. But… no, all that glitters is not gold. There are TGfU issues that should be improved. For example, these categories are disconnected from each other because TGfU lacks classification criteria. The "goal of game" is a concept that has been studied, but it has not been applied to physical education. The aim of the article is to show how to deepen the understanding sports and traditional games from the "goal of game", and to propose its applicability to physical education. Methods: The traits of "goal of game" will be identified by investigating two close concepts, "prelusory goal" (formalist philosophy of sport) and "motor-goal" (motor praxeology). Results: The traits of "goal of game" concept: main-motor-problem, described in the game rules and that the players will try to solve during the game dynamics. The "goal of game" chances: (1) It allows us to understand sports and traditional games based on their internal logic (2) It allows us to classify traditional games and sports based on classification criteria and that can be useful to organize the physical education program; (3) It allows us to deepen the understanding of sporting games and their applicability to physical education: on the one hand, proposing progressively more specific goal of game options and, on the other hand, proposing a network model of intentions of play to understand the game dynamics and to design learning tasks. Conclusions: The conclusions collect some properties of the "goal of game" concept in order to propose its applicability in physical education students learning: identify and compare the main-motor-problems of the games; solve these problems during the game dynamics; transfer the procedures used to solve other games. The goal(d) of game amazes us; maybe physical education teachers are curious to continue discovering this wonderful treasure.

According to the theory of practice architecture, every practice enacted in classrooms is a result of interaction between social, physical and spatial elements. In relation, from a practice-referenced perspective, it is necessary to know which teaching-learning implementation features could help teachers/coaches/researchers to assemble Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) interventions in relation to the institutional environment. Purpose: This review aimed to explore from a practice-referenced perspective how TGfU researchers reported their interventions based on the teaching-learning implementation features (intervention design as a function of the context, intervention length, lesson content, basic lesson elements, lesson alignment, teacher/coach experience with the approach, and lesson validation and treatment verification) and their association with learners' outcomes. Results: We found 20 studies that included some of the teaching-learning implementation features, but none of the studies included all of these features. We also found that studies of TGfU measured and reported learners' outcomes in a variety of ways. This creates difficulties for drawing conclusions about the relationships between the presence of teaching-learning implementation features and student learning outcomes. Conclusion: Further TGfU interventions should be planned to consider the following: (a) that lessons need to be designed as a function of the context; (b) the number of intervention lessons, their duration and the duration of each lesson task; (c) the concrete tactical and technique contents and goals per lesson; (d) the modified games, questions and achievable challenges as basic lesson elements; (e) the alignment between the basic lesson elements and the structure of lessons, based on the goals of each lesson; (f) that teachers/coaches need to have previous experience in TGfU and be trained on the specific study purpose; (g) that lessons should be validated before implementation and verified during intervention; (h) researchers should regulate the ways in which learners' outcomes are measured and reported within TGfU studies.

Abstract Aim: This study investigated the impact of a handball-teaching program through the understanding of the TGfU on motor coordination (MC) and technical skills of students. Methods: The sample consisted of 43 students of both genders, with a mean age of 14.3 years (± 0.46), divided into two groups, G1 - Teaching Games of Understanding (TGfU) and G2 - TGfU + MC, and both received 20 classes. We used the Körperkoordinationstest für Kinder (KTK) for the assessment of MC and the Game Performance Assessment Instrument (GPAI) for technical skills in handball. Results: The categorization confirmed the reliability of the application of teaching programs and the results showed that, after the intervention, both groups presented meaningful improvements in MC, considering time and gender effect. The female students presented a larger impact on MC in both teaching programs, while the male students obtained a larger impact in the technical skill execution index when received the TGfU + MC model. Still, the relative frequency for the classification of a good MC increased in both groups after the intervention, and the normal MC was the one with the highest frequency in both groups and genders after the proposed program. Conclusion: We concluded that the teaching program was able to provide meaningful improvements in MC considering both groups and that the proposal of the inclusion of specific MC elevated the impact of technical skills for male students.

O objetivo deste artigo é indicar as potencialidades do Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) no ensino do esporte nas aulas de Educação Física. O estudo é um recorte do referencial teórico da dissertação: "Esporte na Educação Física escolar: uma proposta pedagógica no ensino do Handebol", com base em livros, anais de eventos, teses, dissertações e artigos que tematizam o TGfU, escritos em português, inglês e espanhol, sem recorte cronológico, buscando o máximo de obras que contribuíssem com o estudo. São apresentados os princípios pedagógicos, fases e reformulações do TGfU, além de estudos empíricos que evidenciam a capacidade do modelo em incrementar a aprendizagem e a motivação dos alunos, indicando a pertinência do TGfU no ensino do esporte na Educação Física escola (AU).


The purpose of this article is to indicate the potential of Teaching Games for Understanfing (TGfU), in the teaching of sport in Physical Education classes. The study is an excerpt from the theoretical framework of the dissertation: "Sport in Physical Education at school: a pedagogical proposal in the teaching of Handball", based on books, annals of events, theses, dissertations and articles, which focus on TGfU, written in Portuguese, English and Spanish, without chronological cut, seeking the maximum number of works that contribute to the study. The pedagogical principles, phases and reformulations of the TGfU are presented, as well as empirical studies that demonstrate the model's capacity to increase students' learning and motivation, indicating the relevance of TGfU in the teaching of sport in school Physical Education (AU).


El propósito de este artículo es indicar el potencial de la Enseñanza de Juegos para la Comprensión (TGfU), en la enseñanza del deporte en las clases de Educación Física. El estudio es un extracto del marco teórico de la disertación: "El deporte en la educación física en la escuela: una propuesta pedagógica en la enseñanza del balonmano", basado en libros, anales de eventos, tesis, disertaciones y artículos, que se centran en TGfU, escrito en portugués, inglés y español, sin corte cronológico, buscando el máximo número de obras que contribuyan al estudio. Se presentan los principios pedagógicos, fases y reformulaciones del TGfU, así como estudios empíricos que demuestran la capacidad del modelo para incrementar el aprendizaje y la motivación de los estudiantes, indicando la relevancia del TGfU en la enseñanza del deporte en la Educación Física escola (AU).

Unlike Dickens's novel, this is not a tale of light and darkness, order and chaos, good and evil…It is, though, a story worth to be told about two standpoints about games and sports, teaching and research, physical education simply put, that have pursued similar interests on parallel tracks for too long, despite their apparent closeness and shared cultural grounds. The objective of this conceptual analysis is to try and reconcile two perspectives, namely motor praxeology and teaching games for understanding (TGfU), born in the last third of the XX century in France and England with the intention to rethink the foundations of physical education (PE) and sports teaching. Pierre Parlebas, from the French side of the English Channel, claimed in 1967 that sports make part of PE, that team sports must be considered from a specific, sociomotor point of view, and that motor conducts (i.e., the significative organisation of motor behaviour), not sports techniques, are the corner-stone of PE and sports coaching. In the early 1980s, from the English side of La Manche, Almond, Thorpe, and Bunker made a plea for a shift in the way to teach games (sporting collective duels mostly), deeply concerned by the negative impact of the traditional technics-centred approach on motivation, competence and attained level of the least able in school situations. Our conclusion is that TGfU, or game-based approaches to sports coaching and teaching, can take great advantage of the motor-praxeological rationale for three reasons: firstly, because concepts like understanding, game sense and action principles are operatively, semiotically linked to the reality of the playing process; secondly, because the inner structures of the games that constrain players and guide their motor conducts, permit to integrate games in the general system of sporting games, no matter their level of institutionalisation; finally, because any motor intervention process is better thought of and more systematically developed upon the operational concepts of internal logic and expected practical effects of game playing. This time, Paris could be the place to go to in search of solutions, not the city to run away from in hope of consolation.

The purpose of the present work was to explore whether fourth-grade physical education students improved their game performance, knowledge and psychosocial variables with Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) to a greater extent after an eight-lesson period in comparison to a 14-lesson period. The study followed a mixed-methods approach in which the design consisted of a first assessment, a second assessment after Lesson 9 (eight-lesson period) and a third assessment after Lesson 16 (14-lesson period). A TGfU floorball intervention was carried out between assessments. The participants (n = 40) were in their fourth year of elementary education. According to students' background and setting, we decided to implement three broad and interrelated strategies to enact the intervention built on the TGfU pedagogical features. Data were collected through Game Performance Assessment Instrument, knowledge questionnaire, enjoyment, perceived competence and intention to be physically active scales and semi-structured interviews. Quantitatively, Friedman's χ2 was used to explore differences in the variables and Wilcoxon's Z post-hoc comparisons were performed to determine: (a) first-second and first-third assessment differences; and (b) second-third assessment differences. Qualitatively, data were open and axial coded line-by-line and incident-to-incident in sub-themes. The quantitative results show no significant differences between the two periods (p > 0.05). However, there were improvements after both periods compared with the first assessment (p < 0.05). The qualitative information supported that the pedagogical strategies implemented could be key to explain the similarities between the two practice volumes. In conclusion, the amount of practice should not be considered as the only variable in the design of interventions with TGfU.

The question of how games should be taught is still a controversial subject. There has been a growing number of studies on teaching games and coaching sports since the first publication of Bunker and Thorpe on Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU). In this sense, the present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to systematically review the scientific literature about the effects of technical and tactical approach interventions on skill execution and decision making, and to examine the influence of the teacher/coach management style. A systematic literature search was carried out in accordance with PRISMA guidelines in Web of Science (WOS), PubMed (Medline), Scopus, and SportDiscus electronic databases. A total of seven and six studies were deemed to meet the inclusion criteria for decision making and skill execution, respectively. Meta-analysis results showed that tactical interventions achieved significant improvements in decision making (effect size = 0.89 with 95% confidence interval (CI) from 0.12 to 1.65), but they did not show significant improvements in skill execution (effect size = 0.89 with 95% CI from -0.45 to 2.23) compared to technical approaches. However, the heterogeneity of interventions was large and the quality of evidence was low according to GRADE. In conclusion, tactical approaches are recommended to teach games and sports in order to develop technique, understanding, tactical knowledge, and decision making, which are demanded in game play. These findings could be useful for teachers and coaches to improve these aspects of their players and students.

El objetivo del presente estudio fue analizar el efecto de un programa de enseñanza comprensiva, basado en el cuestionamiento, sobre la toma de decisiones en las habilidades del pase y del lanzamiento, en una unidad didáctica de baloncesto en Educación Primaria. Participaron 37 alumnos de 6º de Primaria con edades comprendidas entre los 11 y 12 años. La variable independiente fue el programa de intervención, basado en el modelo Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU). La variable de toma de decisiones fue evaluada a través de la observación sistemática. Los resultados obtenidos mostraron que, tras la intervención, los alumnos que recibieron el cuestionamiento durante el desarrollo de las actividades formativas mejoraron su toma de decisiones en comparación con los alumnos que no lo recibieron. Estos resultados manifiestan la necesidad de incluir este modelo pedagógico en las programaciones docentes en los niveles superiores de la etapa de Primaria


O principal objetivo do estudo foi analisar o efeito de um programa de ensino centrado na compreensão, baseado no questionamento, na tomada de decisões nas ações de passe e do lançamento, numa unidade didática de basquetebol no ensino fundamental. Participaram 37 alunos com idades compreendidas entre 11 e 12 anos. A variável independente foi o programa de intervenção baseado no modelo Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU). A variável dependente de tomada de decisão foi avaliada através da observação sistemática. Os resultados mostraram que, após a intervenção, os alunos que receberam o questionamento durante o desenvolvimento das atividades de treino melhoraram sua tomada de decisão em relação aos alunos que não o receberam. Esses resultados mostram a necessidade de incluir esse modelo pedagógico nos programas de ensino nos níveis superiores do ensino fundamental


The main purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of a comprehensive questioning-based teaching program about decision-making on passing and throwing abilities in a Primary Education teaching unit focused on basketball. Thirty-seven students aged 11-12 participated in the study. The independent variable was the intervention program based on the Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU). The decision-making variable was assessed by systematic observation. The results obtained showed that, after the intervention, the students who received the questioning when developing training activities improved their decision-making compared to those who did not. These results show the need to include this pedagogical model in teaching programs at the higher levels of Primary Education

The field hockey coaching process across both Malaysia and India favours a traditional, coach-centred approach of mastering technical skills in terms of game play parameters, fitness, intensity, and load training, whereas a tactical- and player-centred pedagogical approach still takes a backseat. On the other hand, the Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) model offers tactical-cognitive instruction and is gaining international recognition for its ability to produce intelligent players via a problem-solving approach in game play. Therefore, the purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to investigate the effect of TGfU compared to skill mastery instruction, termed as Skill Drill Technical (SDT), among Malaysian and Indian elite junior hockey players in term of the game play attributes of adjust and cover in 5 vs. 5 small-sided game play and game play intensity via heart rate (HR) at different points of game play. A total of n = 60 players with an average age of 15 ± 1.03 was selected via simple random sampling from both countries involved in this study and assigned equally to groups, with 15 per group for TGfU and for SDT across Malaysia and India. Gathered data were analysed using the ANOVA and ANCOVA techniques. Findings indicated that there were no significant differences for adjust in 5 vs. 5 game play between TGfU and SDT across Malaysia and India after the intervention. For cover, there was significant improvement for Malaysian players using the TGfU model compared to SDT. In contrast, there was no significant difference between these two models among the Indian players after the intervention. There was significant difference between these two models in terms of warm-up HR across the two countries, and HR was higher via TGfU. For HR immediately after the 5 vs. 5 game play intervention and HR after three minutes' recovery, Indian players with TGfU recorded a higher and significant difference compared to SDT. However, findings indicated no significant difference between these two instruction types among Malaysians, although TGfU proved to have higher HR intensity. Therefore, these findings reiterated that TGfU is a useful approach for game play to enhance intensity and cardiac output. In conclusion, for TGfU to be more relevant to the coaching environment, future research should link game play and physiological parameters. TGfU should able to overcome the barriers of tradition and cultural background that may hinder its momentum.
